We will write a children coming of age book on these pages, based on our real life experiences in Mt Greenwood, Beverly, Morgan Park, Ada Park, and other south side Chicago neighborhoods. I have no idea how it will develop, or whether it will ever amount to anything publishable, but we will enjoy it. And who knows, maybe we will get rich and famous. Our neighborhoods were made somewhat famous by the writings of John Powers. His books include "The Last Catholic in America", and "Do Black Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up". Our little book will be something like that, perhaps.Send your posts to the EMPEHI Blog, and I will bring them over and post them on this blog, http://mtgreasewood.blogspot.com/. Jeeze.....Catholics and publics........

I went to catechism at St. Cajetan every Wednesday at 2.I hated that even worse that going to Clissold...I remember that they got out for the summer earlier than we did and would stand out on playground and shout at us. We learned to be terrified of God, and I dreaded "first confession"......I knew I was doomed.

When the day came, I kept moving back in the line...I kept watching the little green light over the confessional door....it was on when someone was kneeling inside....every time it went off and someone came out, my knees got weaker. When it was my turn, I just knew I was going to throw up. I went inside, closed the door, knelt down and waited for what seemed like 4 days...suddenly, the little door slid back.....and the odor of alcohol came thru the screen....it smelled just like my dad smelled when he'd wake me up in the middle of the night to wack me around.

Conclusion? DAD was in the confessional.....I went out the door, down the aisle and out of the church to the complete surprise of the nuns.....when one of them
finally caught up to me, I told her that my dad was in there and he was drunk again......she got that "oh, shit" look in her eyes...she said that if I came back in and sat with the class, I wouldn't have to go into the"box"....and made me promise not to tell anyone what happened. I did first communion without doing the confession.

Years later I learned that Father Sharp was a notorious drunk and was re-assigned shortly afterwards.
